Coronavirus update – Tuesday 17 March, 2020

There have been a total of 1,950positive tests for coronavirus in the UK as of today, up from 1,543 on Monday.

As of yesterday, the UK death toll is 55.

The government’s chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, has warned that as many as 55,000 people in the UK could be infected.

The Euro 2020 football tournament has been postponed to 2021.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has advised against all non-essential travel abroad.

Events and parades across Ireland were cancelled and postponed on Saint Patrick’s Day.

Fashion chain Laura Ashley has said it has filed for administration after rescue talks were thwarted by the outbreak.

Iran has temporarily released 85,000 prisoners in a bid to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Dixons Carphone has announced it will close all of its 451 Carphone Warehouse standalone stores, with 2,900 jobs being axed.

Odeon says it has closed all its cinemas “until further notice” following by the government’s guidance.
